Clinical Trials For Medical LSD Are In Progress

ThumbsUp_Hippie

If you smoked weed before or during the George W. Bush administration, then you remember a time when certain talkative stoners had a lot to say about the medicinal benefits of weed, and sometimes they could find people who agreed with them.  The logic back then, which became a major impetus for the medical cannabis movement which is now mainstream, was that weed is a relatively harmless substance.  It is a medicinal plant, its intoxicating effects last no longer than those of alcohol, and unlike alcohol, no one has ever died from a marijuana overdose.  For decades, the discourse around decriminalizing cannabis for medical and recreational use is that it is unlike other illicit substances.  By contrast, LSD has had the reputation of being a hard drug for as long as it has had the reputation of making Pink Floyd planetarium shows look even more colorful.  Before the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 entered the picture, though, LSD was just another pharmaceutical drug, the potential of which was only being investigated.  Proponents of the medical use of LSD are not as numerous or as vocal as proponents of medical cannabis, but the movement has gained enough momentum that clinical trials on medical LSD are currently in progress in Florida.  Meanwhile, LSD remains on the list of Schedule I controlled substances, so if you get caught with it in your possession, you will need a West Palm Beach drug offenses lawyer.

Details of the MM-120 Clinical Trial

As of March 2024, MindMed is conducting clinical trials in Broward County to test the effectiveness of one of its products, MM-120, as a treatment for generalized anxiety disorder.  As for MM-120, the MM in its name is an abbreviation for MindMed, and the 120 is a serial number.  MM-120 is just LSD by another name; the only way in which it differs from the acid tabs you buy at a Grateful Dead concert is that it has preservatives to make it more shelf stable.  Street LSD tabs degrade easily when exposed to light.

Each patient in the clinical trial either gets a placebo or a single dose of MM-120.  The dose could be 25, 50, 100, or 200 micrograms, in other words, the same dose you get from a recreational acid tab or slightly higher.  Patients are monitored for 12 hours in a trip room, and then they go home.  They keep records of their anxiety symptoms and report back to the researchers in 12 weeks.  So far, hardly anyone has had a bad trip in the trip room, and more than two thirds of patients are noticeably less anxious 12 weeks later.  The clinical trial does not involve talk therapy at all, suggesting that a single dose of LSD alone could be an effective treatment for anxiety.
