Illegal Possession Of Sea Turtle Eggs

Florida law protects the nests and eggs of endangered wildlife species as much as it protects the endangered animals themselves. Perhaps you have seen signs in parks, or even in the grassy medians of shopping center parking lots, warning you to avoid disturbing the habitats of burrowing owls, and you might have even seen the owls themselves hopping around in the grass if you approach slowly enough. Sea turtle habitats are equally delicate, and you might sometimes see signs on the beach alerting you to the presence of sea turtle eggs; some jurisdictions even build enclosures to protect the nests. Five species of marine turtles, namely the Green Turtle, the Loggerhead, the Leatherback, the Hawksbill, and Kemp’s Ridley, make their homes in Florida’s waters and nest on Florida’s beaches. Sea turtle nesting is truly a wonder of nature. A sea turtle’s flippers are made for swimming, but every year, the mother turtles carry themselves up the beach on their flippers to lay their eggs in a safe place, and later the tiny hatchlings swim through the sand toward their permanent home, before they have ever swum in water. In Florida, it is against the law to possess sea turtles of any of Florida’s five native species or their eggs, unless you have a permit to keep the turtles for research or educational purposes. It is also against the law to disturb sea turtle nests. If you are facing criminal charges for illegal possession of marine turtles or their eggs, contact a West Palm Beach criminal defense lawyer.
Flagler County Man Arrested for Illegal Possession of Sea Turtle Eggs and Controlled Substances
A Flagler County man’s legal troubles began with charges of aggravated battery against his ex. In the aggravated battery case, the court ordered him to stay away from his ex, but in the summer of 2025, a police officer saw the man’s van parked outside his ex’s house, with the man asleep in the driver’s seat. The officer woke him up and noticed sea turtle eggs on the passenger side floor mat of the van. The man said that he had found the eggs on the beach and that, since they had come from two nests that rain had washed away, the man was sure that the eggs were not viable. He did not say why he had parked his van so close to his ex’s house.
Next to the eggs was a cannabis pipe. The officer then searched the car and found cannabis and drug paraphernalia, as well as methamphetamine, fentanyl, and a single Xanax pill. The owner of the van is now facing criminal charges for violating a restraining order, illegal possession of controlled substances, possession of drug paraphernalia, and illegal possession of sea turtle eggs.
