Package Theft Or An Honest Mistake?

If you really want to feel old, try telling teenagers about how much fun it used to be to go to the Boca Raton Town Center. You never felt as fabulous as you did when you were loitering on benches at the mall, sipping Orange Julius before such drinks were called smoothies and soaking up the air conditioning. Retail therapy is completely different for the young generation. The pageant of merchandise that you will only be able to afford if you get a job now appears before you on a tiny screen enabled with infinite scroll instead of in store windows. The bombardment of commercial products you can’t afford feels more isolating these days, and finally getting the funds or the credit to buy one of them involves less communal celebration than it did in the 90s, when you could read your peers’ facial expressions as you handed over the cash to buy showstopping kicks or a state-of-the-art video game console. One UPS package looks rather like another, and no one is around to be impressed when you remove the contents of the package. Despite this, the penalties are similar when people steal from retail stores as when they steal delivery packages. Recent Cases of Package Theft in South Florida
One might expect the weeks leading up to Christmas to be peak season for package theft, but this summer, South Florida has witnessed several cases of large-scale package theft. In one case, a man from Hialeah allegedly followed a UPS truck to an apartment building in Key Biscayne. After the UPS driver had delivered the packages, the defendant allegedly told the front desk concierge that he was authorized to retrieve packages on behalf of the addressees. He was arrested several days later when he attended an appointment with his probation officer. News reports did not indicate the charge for which he was previously serving probation.
Meanwhile, at a UPS processing facility in Doral, two employees of the overnight shift allegedly pasted over the shipping labels on packages containing valuable electronic devices. The new shipping labels sent the packages to addresses that the defendants controlled. Prosecutors alleged that they diverted more than $100,000 in merchandise by the time of their arrest. The defendants are a 53-year-old woman from Miami-Dade County employed as an overgoods clerk and a 52-year-old man from Pembroke Pines whose position title was package handler. The defendants are facing criminal charges for second-degree theft and organized fraud. The stolen goods included Bose headphones and Apple iPhones. Prosecutors cite surveillance camera footage from the UPS warehouse as evidence. They allege that the surveillance footage shows the defendants opening packages, repackaging the contents, and placing the new packages in an unloading area to be shipped.
